BOSTON -- Verizon Communications has named two executives to key positions in New England. The changes become effective Nov. 1.

Robert Mudge, president Verizon Massachusetts, has been named regional president-New England.

Donna Cupelo, president Verizon Rhode Island, succeeds Mudge and assumes the new position of region president - Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

As regional president, Mudge assumes responsibility for building and maintaining the company's seven million phone lines in five New England states.

"Bob has a proven record of assuring excellent customer service in Massachusetts," said John Killian, senior vice president-National Operations. "He will help us build on our record of delivering high quality service throughout New England."

As region president, Cupelo assumes overall responsibility for the company's service delivery, capital investment and public policy
